An Unforgettable Summer in Thailand: A Journey of Learning and Growth

This summer, I decided to break away from my usual routines and embark on a journey that would not only enrich my own life but also allow me to give back in a meaningful way. I yearned for an experience that would challenge me, broaden my horizons, and leave a lasting impact on others. After some online research, I stumbled upon a project that involved teaching at two English-speaking schools in Thailand. With excitement and anticipation, I signed up, eager to fill my backpack with knowledge and experiences. Little did I know, I would return home with much more than I had ever imagined—ten suitcases, two hiking backpacks filled with stories, and a heart full of unforgettable memories.

From the moment I arrived in Thailand, the country captivated me in ways I never expected. Thailand surprised me with its warmth, its hospitality, and its vibrancy. Our adventure began with our arrival at the accommodation, where we were welcomed with open arms. A delicious Thai meal awaited us, already laid out on the table, setting the tone for the incredible culinary journey we were about to embark on. As if that wasn't enough, we were handed fresh coconuts straight from the trees in the garden, a gesture that made us feel instantly at home. Our hosts helped us settle in, providing a comprehensive introduction to the project that left everyone eager to get started.

The first day at the schools felt like stepping onto a stage as a superstar. The children greeted us with enthusiastic hugs, and their eyes sparkled with excitement as they clamored to play with us. We were immediately enveloped in a sense of belonging, and their curiosity about our presence made the lessons all the more engaging. The children’s openness and eagerness to learn created an atmosphere that was both inspiring and rewarding. It was a joy to conduct our workshops, where we introduced them to the concept of global warming and simple actions they could take to combat it. Through playful activities, we crafted globes and played sorting games, teaching them about recycling in a fun and interactive way. We also introduced new English words, helping them expand their vocabulary. One week, we delved into the topic of the Olympics, playing bingo with sports themes, crafting Olympic torches, and engaging in games that reinforced their understanding of English words related to the events.

But it wasn’t just the children who learned during our time there. We, too, gained invaluable insights from them and the Thai people. We were immersed in their customs, their way of life, their cuisine, and even a bit of their language. If I had to sum up Thai culture in two words, it would be openness and cheerfulness. Everywhere we went, people greeted us with warm smiles, and the teachers treated us with the utmost respect, which left a lasting impression on me. The generosity and kindness of the Thai people touched my heart in profound ways.

One family, in particular, made my experience truly extraordinary—Aom and her parents. Their hospitality and unwavering support ensured that my journey was nothing short of exceptional. They went out of their way to make our stay as comfortable as possible, even accommodating my vegetarian diet with care and attention to detail, which I deeply appreciated. Aom and her family’s efforts left a lasting imprint on my heart, ensuring that Thailand will always hold a special place in it.

This trip has ignited a passion within me to pursue more projects like this in the future. The connections I made, the lessons I learned, and the incredible experiences I had have inspired me to seek out opportunities where I can continue to make a difference. I returned to Belgium with a wealth of knowledge, not just about the world but about myself. I am now more open, more curious, and more determined to contribute positively to the world around me.

To anyone considering a trip to Thailand, I cannot recommend it enough. It is a country that offers not just stunning landscapes and rich cultural heritage, but also a profound sense of connection and community. My time there was truly life-changing, and I encourage everyone to embark on their own journey to Thailand. Whether you're seeking adventure, personal growth, or simply an unforgettable experience, Thailand has something for everyone. I promise you won’t be disappointed.
