from ICL camp 2407

By Nihayatul Fadlillah Volunteer in VSA2407 Education/InterCultural and Language (ICL) camp - Songkhla 8-20/7 2024

Visiting a country and learning about new cultures and languages has been one of my wishlists so far. This year I had the opportunity to visit Thailand for 2 weeks to volunteer in the Intercultural Songkhla program from July 8 – 20, 2024. Our main activity is teaching English to students in primary schools.

We carry out several activities with the main activity being teaching. The first school we visited was Bankhuankhob School. We taught for 2 days. On the first day, we taught in Primary 1 and 2. Students looked enthusiastic in participating in the learning. We started learning by singing and dancing. Students were invited to sing ABC songs and dance children's songs. On the second day, we teach Primary 3,4,5, and 6. Each class has different teaching materials. We practiced transacting using English conversation, memorizing body parts, and the names of fruits and vegetables.

On the 3rd day, we taught at Bankaorang School. We were warmly welcomed by the teachers and students there. We teach from Primary 1 to Primary 6. Just like the previous school, we teach English with fun methods such as singing, dancing, watching movies, coloring, and drawing. They are enthusiastic every time they are given new material. For me, participating in learning at this school provides many new perspectives on teaching and learning. Of course, this is valuable for me who is pursuing the world of education.

On Saturday, the first week of activities. We visited Thaksin University to share about culture. There we introduced Indonesia, like the national anthem, must-visit places, performances and culture, as well as its natural wealth. In addition, we were invited to tour Thaksin University and Songkhla Old Town. We went around accompanied by buddies from Thaksin University. Our mission is to take pictures with the spots designated by Mrs. Nok. This activity was very fun and I also made new friends there.

This activity made me fall in love with nature and food in Thailand. During the activity, we visited several places such as Samila beach, Ton Nga Chang waterfall, and Khlongla reservoir. These three places are very beautiful, I hope to be able to visit them in the future. In addition, the food in Thailand is a must-try when visiting. Starting from heavy food to dessert, everything is very delicious.

During the activity, we stayed at the house of our project leader, P Que. P Que and his family were very kind to us during the activity. They provided us with a comfortable place to live and delicious food. Every night we have dinner with a different menu. Every meal that P Que’s mother cooks never fails. Our project leader also often invites us to the market to try foods that we have never tried.

Not forgetting my beautiful friends from Indonesia, Vidya, and beautiful girls from Vietnam Katie and My. I will miss you all. Thank you for giving me a pleasant experience. Hopefully we will meet in the future with more interesting stories.
