Final Report
My time at RPG 24 School, Phayao, has come to an end. But how can I squeeze a year full of new beginnings, experiences, and new people into one page? I don't think I’ll ever be able to. However, I’ll try to give you a brief summary of my voluntary year in Thailand.
To be honest, I don’t really remember what I expected before I came here, but I know that, in the end, my experience was better than I had imagined. In my opinion, living at a boarding school was the perfect mix between a host family and living alone. You always have people around you who can help you and let you experience the culture, but you
About my work: The volunteer’s task was to improve the students' English skills by joining the English lessons and other activities. During the English lessons, I usually assisted the Thai English teachers with playing games or pronunciation. In some cases, we had to teach the lessons ourselves, so we were able to come up with topics and activities for the lessons. That was a very interesting experience for me. I enjoyed preparing and teaching English lessons. Especially in the beginning, I always had something to do, which was really nice. The teachers also took us to events or went out to eat with us, which was a lot of fun. I learned a lot about Thai culture. In the end, there was less work for us to do, maybe because there were too many volunteers, as four more volunteers joined our school in August. Sometimes, this was challenging because we were bored and couldn’t do much about it. However, I always felt very welcomed and comfortable at RPG 24.
Not only did we join the English lessons, but we also participated in activities like art class, beverage production, and Thai music class. It was really fun. These activities were designed not only to encourage students to speak English outside of the classroom but also to teach us new skills and aspects of Thai culture. For me, it was really nice because I found some activities inspiring and now want to pursue them when I’m back home.
As RPG is a boarding school, we also had long breaks, during which we had a lot of time to travel around. This was also a very interesting experience, as most of the time I travelled alone. First of all, I saw new places and met new people, which was really nice. Moreover, I learned to deal with challenges better and also find quick solutions. Unfortunately, I had a lot of problems with my visa, which put me in stressful situations, but somehow it always worked out in the end.
Finally, I really want to say thank you. Thank you to RPG 24 school for trusting me with their students. Thank you to the teachers who always tried to do their best to help me and make me feel at home. Thank you to my fellow volunteers who always had an open ear for me. Thank you to all the people I was able to meet and who became dear friends. And last but not least, thank you to VSA, who made this year possible. I will never forget this special year of my life. I will forever be grateful.
