During my ten-month volunteer experience in Thailand, I have been teaching English to students in grades 7, 8, and 9. Working in a completely different cultural and educational environment has allowed me to develop a wide range of valuable personal and professionalskills.
One of the most important skills I have strengthened is patience. Many of my students have only basic English skills, so I have learned to explain concepts in different ways, repeat instructions when necessary, and encourage students without becoming frustrated.
In addition, I strengthened my communication skills by working with students, Thai teachers, and the local community despite language barriers. This experience taught me how to communicate clearly, use non-verbal communication effectively, and build trust across cultures.
Another essential skill I developed is flexibility. Lesson plans often had to be adapted due to changing schedules, school events, or different learning levels. I learned to respond quickly to unexpected situations and adjust my teaching methods to meet my students' needs.
Teaching abroad has also improved my creativity and problem-solving skills. With limited teaching materials, I designed engaging activities and interactive lessons that motivated students to participate and enjoy learning English.
Overall, this volunteer experience has helped me grow both personally and professionally. It has strengthened my confidence as a teacher, improved my leadership abilities, and equipped me with skills that will benefit me in my future studies and career.
