Brief post about volunteer experience at Folklore Museum
By Ingeborg Schaefer ,Folklore Museum-SongkhlaThailand, April 2026
Late into the night the craftsmen carve designs into the pale banana trunks that will decorate a central altar at the ceremony of Wang Win. This late night effort is intentionally done so the trunks do not dry out before the next days event. Other preparations have already been underway days before. This ceremony is hosted each year by the Folklore Museum on Ko Yo to honor the monks as well as the elders of the island. Bathing images, listening to the prayers of the monks, paying respect to elders, eating snacks, and making coconut leaf decorations are all part of this day. As a volunteer at the museum this is just one of the varied events, workshops and conferences that one can participate in and help with.
