By Loreen Kuhn One year program volunteer at VSAMLTV2301-Ban Prawnoom school-Chiang mai. Mid-Term Evaluation 6-10 January 2026
I am doing my volunteer year at RPG50 School in Khon Kaen. Khon Kaen is a very beautiful area. It is close to the city, but also calm and green. I really like living and working here.
At the school, I teach English grade 1 to 4, so primary school. At the beginning, everything was new for me – the school system, the culture, and the language. But after sometime, I got used to the school life and my daily routine. I learned how the school works and how to teach young children in a fun way.
In the last five months, I have achieved a lot. I did my first visa trip to Malaysia, which was very exciting. I started to learn Thai, so I can understand and speak a little bit now. I also built strong friendships with other volunteers in my project, for which I am very grateful, and I also made new friends in Thailand.
My lessons are often creative and fun. For example, at Christmas, I did a special lesson with my students. We built a Christmas house out of paper, and the children really enjoyed it. Moments like this make me very happy.
I also had time to travel a little. I went to the beach, and I spent a holiday on an island with my dad, which was very special for me. In Bangkok, I explored famous places like Wat Arun, other temples, and museums.
I celebrated Thai festivals, for example Loy Kratong on the 5th of November. It was very beautiful and fascinating. We also had a big Christmas celebration at school, where we sang on stage. It was a lot of fun and definitely entertaining.
I also took part in school sports days and tried many Thai dishes, some spicy, some very sweet.
This time was not always easy. I had highs and lows, but I learned a lot about myself. I became more open, more brave, and more selfreflective.
In the future, I would like to travel more during the holidays, explore new places, and make a lot of memories with my friends. I want to build stronger connections with my students, improve my teaching skills, and feel even more at home in the school life.
Overall, this abroad year is a very special and beautiful experience, and I am very thankful for everything I can learn here.
